id like to say that splitting up on the doors is the only way i beat the mission. this is how the set up works:
1 warrior on bottom
1 ele on bottom
1 ranger or necro on bottom
monk on top, using ballistas

this has worked for me 4+ characters, just get it organized

A couple of days ago, I finally made it with henchies. It took me about 14 or 15 tries. In the end it was a pretty boring experience; again fighting the mobs in town or in the keep. I once failed in the second part, defending the keep with a pug, and once with henchies in the same situation. It was when the mursaat boss shows up.
Most failures were because the king died, fighting in the town or the keep. He is battlemad and aggroes to many mobs. The henchmen team can mostly handle that but the king won't (I think you have an amazing henchmen team here). That's the point; with henchmen you have to initiate the fight, which launches the king. So first lesson, attack a mob that is clearly alone; no other mob is approaching.
I did it with a ranger, pure build, marksman, expertise and wildernes. I use debillating shot to interrupt, barrage for multiple targets, an armour penetrating shot, savage shot. Then two traps, flame and spike (I think very important here) throw dirt, and dodge or storm chaser.
The second part, defending the king. I kept near the king, on the wall, at the top of the two stairs. Be aware that the enemy can come from 4 sides, the two stairs and both sides of the wall. Mostly they come via the stairs. I used the catapults once, before the second parts starts, to clear out the mob that is standing outside the fort. The just stand there take damage and die (?).
You see the enemy coming. They seldom come from all side simultaniously (I think never). So near the king you have to defend two 'gates'. My ranger laid traps on the stair on the side the enemy was coming, two, sometimes three, traps have a long reloading time. Then we waited to recieve the enemy. It is close combat, so I use a short bow.
Bosses are hard to get down because of there level. I've learned that they don't do more harm than the others, mostly less, and the don't take care of their buddies; the are pretty bad in protecting. Take them out at last.
The group with the mursaat boss is the hardest. They come after the fourth or fifth wave (I think). Be ready, healed, prepared.
After that group a lot of small groups come, two jade armourers, two jade bows. This fase is rather dull. Finally Confessor Dorian comes with a bunch of white mantle. They give quite a fight, but when you come that far, they shouldn't be a problem.
With this tactic, partly red on one of the forums, so credit for the author(s), I succeeded. In the second part the king didn't get a scratch, and me and the henchmen didn't die a single time. At one moment the King had left his place (he is standing all the time behind you as a dumb animal, as if he has nothing to do with it) and stood on the stair. Is that a joke of Anet? I could have kicked his ass back to where he stood. Might have been my 15th or 16th try.
I congratulate not you, who have done the mission in on or two tries. I congratulate Anet for making the worst npc ever to perform in a computergame. Seriously, they should give the king a more defensive AI, randomly; say, out of 3 or 4 the king is defensive, not attacking, just following.
Anybody tried to keep his three mates alive? I made it to the gate of the city with them.
You can do this mission with henchmen. Like a said, keeping the king alive in the first part is harder than in the second part. The funny thing is that with the henchmen team you can form, you can handle everything, even two mobs together. The king can't however.
Good luck.
